Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

If you’ve recently found out that you have gum disease, you’re probably wondering if it’s possible to reverse this condition. When gum disease is caught at an early stage, it can be cured. Other stages of the condition can be managed with the latest treatments. At Racine Dental Group, we’re here to help you learn all about the gum disease stages and current treatment options available so that you can take charge of your oral health.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a condition that causes infections of the gums and the structures that support the teeth. In the early stages of gum disease, plaque (a bacterial film) builds up along the gum line. When plaque isn’t removed with professional cleanings and proper home care, it hardens into tartar. This triggers gum inflammation. At this point, you may notice that your gums are swollen or red, and you may have bleeding when you brush or floss. This stage of the disease is known as gingivitis, and it can be reversed with professional dental cleanings and improved oral hygiene at home.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it could progress to periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease. The inflammation from periodontitis causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets of bacteria. This could lead to the destruction of bone and connective tissue. Although periodontitis can’t be reversed, professional care can keep the condition from getting worse. With the right treatment, you can prevent tooth loss and stabilize your gums and jawbone.

In most cases, periodontitis doesn’t respond to regular cleanings. For mild to moderate symptoms, your specialist will remove bacteria below your gum line with scaling and root planing. If you have severe symptoms, your provider will discuss surgical options with you, including flap surgery and bone and tissue grafting. These options may be necessary to stabilize and support your gums. The team at Racine Dental Group is proud to offer the latest treatment methods, and we will customize your treatment to ensure that you receive the best possible outcome.

The most effective way to fight gum disease is to stop it before it starts. Professional cleanings, periodontal exams, regular flossing, and daily brushing are important tools that can help you prevent gum issues. If you’re at a higher risk of gum disease due to genetics or medical conditions, you can still reduce your chances of developing severe gum disease by taking a proactive approach to your oral health.

If you’ve been coping with gum recession, bad breath, bleeding gums, or other signs of gum disease, early intervention is vital. At Racine Dental Group, our specialists can diagnose and treat all stages of gum disease. From mild gingivitis to advanced periodontitis, our compassionate team members are here to provide you with the best possible care at every stage.
