Building Beautiful Smiles: Why Pediatric Dental Care Matters from the Start

From first steps to first words, you want to celebrate all of your child’s “firsts.” Your child’s first tooth is an exciting milestone and a building block for future oral health. At Racine Dental Group, we believe pediatric dentistry is about more than just routine checkups. It’s about giving children positive dental experiences and building healthy habits that stay with them for life.

When Should I Schedule My Child’s First Dental Appointment?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should have their first dental visits no later than 12 months of age. When you see your child’s first tooth, you should schedule the initial visit within six months. Starting dental visits at an early age makes it easier for the dentist to monitor your child’s oral health and provide preventive care. During your child’s visit, we’ll share advice on nutrition, brushing methods, and other steps you can use to take care of your child’s oral health.

What Can I Expect at My Child’s Pediatric Dental Visit?

At your child’s initial appointment, our clinicians will focus on comfort. We’ll perform a very gentle examination of your child’s mouth. This will include counting teeth and checking for decay or other concerns. During the visit, feel free to ask any questions you may have about your child’s oral health. For example, you may want to ask some of these questions:

  • What foods or drinks should we avoid to prevent tooth decay?
  • Could thumb-sucking or using a pacifier be harmful to my child’s teeth?
  • What techniques should I use to brush my child’s teeth?

Our clinicians do their best to create a welcoming and stress-free environment for children. We want your child to be excited to come back to the dentist!

Preventing Cavities in Childhood

Tooth decay is at the top of the list of chronic diseases in children. However, cavities can be prevented with a combination of professional dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and proper home care.

To keep your child’s teeth protected before problems arise, never put your child to bed with a bottle. Additionally, try to limit sugary snacks and drinks before bedtime to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Why Does My Child Need a Pediatric Dentist?

After finishing dental school, pediatric dentists complete two or three years of training in children’s oral health. Their training covers caring for kids from infancy through adolescence, and they have the skills needed to care for children with special needs, anxiety, and complex dental concerns. We create clinics that are designed to be relaxing and enjoyable places for kids.

Making Dental Appointments Pleasant

At Racine Dental Group, we strive to help all of our patients develop lifelong trust in dental care. We want children to feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident at their appointments. Our team members are dedicated to providing positive dental experiences for all of our young patients and their families.
